1. What qualifies you to be in Chief and Council?
Thank you for this opportunity to explain my role in challenging the gaps and absences in procedural aspect of our governance model. This came from researching and writing several letters on a complex estate matter. I have relevant work experience Squamish Nation, Law Firms, National Aboriginal Advocacy and Communications level.
a) I understand the political and legal aspects of protecting our sovereign nationhood;
b) I have travelled extensively and worked with larger First Nations communities;
c) I have worked with project leaders who analyze the social and environmental impacts of resource extraction projects having worked with lawyers who specialize in venture projects;
d) I possess a working knowledge of Squamish Nation administration, past land use plans, past village reserve general history, and political history.
e) I am familiar with understand the role of Council. I have experience working with people. Serving on various minor and adult sports, cultural, other non-profit boards. Where those participating range from 800 to 10,000 people.
2. What does it mean to be on Chief and Council and represent the community?
Councillors must be mindful of their multiple roles #1 communicate with the people #2 be mindful and act within the fiduciary duties #3 do not confuse the best interests for the majority - the collective interests versus a special interest group.
The scope and mandate is paramount however it is the TRUST factor and commitment to govern with good intentions. The WHOLISTIC APPROACH considers balancing the needs of those most underserved and vulnerable balanced with those who rarely access the programs and services.
Rebuilding the trust, mutual respect, and love for our dear stelmexw
3. What are your feelings with regards to the Governance Manual? What were its good points and bad points? Please provide examples.
The Governance Manual does not reflect our traditional teachings. The scope is incomplete and does note involve Membership. The terms of reference could include a true reflection of who we are as a people.
Meaningful engagement must be emphasized (it is not referred to unless I missed a chapter or two?). In the future do we have General Meetings? That connection is not shown perhaps?Fundamental exclusionary measure is that it did not include any “CONFLICT OF INTEREST” aspects, or mention Fiduciary Duties.
4. What are your thoughts on the draft Election Law? Good or bad points that you noticed? Please provide examples.
The policy maybe considered a narrow attempt or first step to election reform. Future work must include direct input from all of our Members. Though it was a good first step in terms of the engagement process.
If elected, I will bring in a motion to call the Electoral Commission to return to Council to request multi media communication strategy with all the membership.
The conflict of interest was not expanded upon.
I was not sure how the approach was for any advance voting.
The procedural element for this process not provided in a step by step. Like when the ballot boxes travel to the North Shore.
Who deals with taking ballots to elders who can not travel to the voting station.
There was much more but I will limit it to this.
People can show up under the influence with this policy.
